Badgey: The Name Badge That Lives in Your Pocket

Every printed conference badge has one job - showing your name to the person in front of you - and it fails constantly. The lanyard twists, the badge spins, and you spend the day talking to people politely squinting at a blank white rectangle hanging backwards on your chest.

Badgey, a tiny indie iPhone app, fixes this with a simple idea: make the badge digital, and make it self-aware.

It knows how you're wearing it

Clip your iPhone to a lanyard, upside down, and Badgey flips your badge right side up for the people facing you, complete with a matching on-screen lanyard. Walk, turn, lean: the badge swings with you, just like a real one. Prefer it still? Turn Swing off.

Slide the phone top-first into a chest pocket and it notices, shrinking your badge to a bright strip so your name stays on show above the pocket's edge. The clever part is how it knows: pocket detection briefly uses the front camera, only while the phone is upside down, and a model on your iPhone decides what it sees - frames are never stored and never leave your phone. The screen also stays awake while you wear the badge, which is the whole point.

Badges that look the part

Five designs cover the occasions: Classic, your photo full bleed under a holographic foil that catches the light as you move; Office, a company ID with passport photo; Event, a conference pass; Minimal, matte graphite with crisp white type; and Live, an animated background with fifteen to choose from - Bloom, Aurora, Prism and friends.

Name, role and link edit right on the card, with background, five type styles and lanyard color to taste. You can keep several badges - one for work, one for the conference you're speaking at, one for the meetup you're volunteering at - and swipe between them.

Share in a scan

Add a link to your website, portfolio or profile, tap the QR button, and the badge flips over to a QR code anyone can scan with their phone's camera. It's the end of spelling your name into a stranger's LinkedIn search box.

The catch

It's iPhone and iPad only, iOS 26 or later, and you still need to supply the actual lanyard - or the chest pocket. Free gets you one badge with the Classic and Live designs and the Bloom animation. Badgey Pro is a one-time purchase, shared with your family, that unlocks more badges, every design, the Live animations, backgrounds and type styles; single designs and animations can also be bought on their own. Either way: no account, no ads, no subscription. And a practical note from physics: your phone is now hanging off your neck at a crowded event, so keep an eye on it.

Verdict

Badgey is a silly-sounding idea executed with unusual care, down to the on-device pocket detection and the foil that catches the light. The free tier is genuinely useful and Pro is a purchase, not rent. If conferences, meetups or trade shows are on your calendar, grab it before the next one - your name will finally face the right way.
