Tag, identify and organise your music files with the MusicBrainz database.
MusicBrainz Picard is a free, open-source music tagger for people who want consistent album information rather than a folder full of anonymous tracks. It uses the MusicBrainz database to match files to recordings and releases, then lets you review the proposed tags before saving them. The distinction between a recording and a release is useful: the same song can appear on an original album, a remaster, a compilation and a deluxe edition with different metadata.
Picard offers metadata-based lookup and AcoustID fingerprint scanning. Lookup makes use of information already present in your files; scanning helps identify music from the audio when the tags are poor or missing. Neither route removes the need to inspect the result. The official quick-start guide recommends an album-oriented workflow, rather than treating the app as a mass fixer for thousands of unrelated single tracks.
It supports common audio formats including MP3, FLAC, OGG, M4A, WMA and WAV. Cover-art retrieval, naming scripts and plugins extend the basic tagging job. The useful starting point remains small: work on a copied album, compare Original Values with New Values, check the track order and edition, then save. File renaming and moving are choices to configure deliberately, not requirements for trying the app.
Its role is identifying and tagging files, not improving or repairing the recording. Better metadata does not make a low-quality source sound better.
Start with a copy of a small album. The project's guide emphasises matching and reviewing albums rather than blindly fixing a huge set of single tracks.
AcoustID scanning can help identify music from audio, even without useful existing tags. A correct match still depends on the available database records and your review.

Match files with MusicBrainz metadata and AcoustID audio fingerprints, then review proposed tags before saving.
AcoustID scanning can help identify recordings from the audio itself. Review the release and track matches before saving any proposed metadata.
