Open-source document sharing with page-by-page analytics and data rooms
Papermark is an open-source document-sharing platform whose core anyone can download and run on their own infrastructure. The official repository provides the full installation path: clone the code, install it with npm (Node.js 18.17 or later), connect a PostgreSQL database and an S3-compatible storage bucket, and documents can be shared through trackable links under your own domain. It positions itself as the open-source alternative to DocSend, and all code outside the ee/ directories is published under the AGPL-3.0 license, with more than 9,000 GitHub stars.
Once running, shared links report page-by-page analytics per viewer - who opened the document, how long they spent on each page and when they returned. Links can be protected with passwords, a one-click NDA gate or a dynamic watermark carrying the viewer's email, IP address and timestamp, and custom domains keep everything in the sender's branding. A public REST API, an npm CLI and an MCP server make the whole workflow scriptable.
A hosted SaaS version also exists at papermark.com, with a free tier (50 documents, one team member) and paid plans; the hosted service advertises SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 certification and EU hosting by default. One boundary matters for self-hosters: the virtual data rooms, Q&A module and advanced permissions live in the ee/ directories under a commercial license, so running those features requires an Enterprise subscription even on your own servers.

Share any document as a link and get page-by-page analytics per viewer: who opened it, time spent on each page, and return visits.
Add passwords, require a one-click NDA before anything loads, and stamp every view with a dynamic watermark carrying the viewer's email, IP and timestamp.
Unlimited permissioned rooms with granular folder and file access, a Q&A module, file requests, AI-assisted redaction and an append-only audit log.
Custom domains and branding keep shared documents looking like your company rather than a third-party service.
Yes for document sharing: the free plan covers 50 documents and one team member with page-by-page analytics. Data rooms, watermarking and NDA gating require a paid plan.
Yes. The AGPLv3 core is self-hostable with your own storage. Enterprise features such as data rooms and advanced permissions remain under a commercial license and require an Enterprise subscription even when self-hosted.
