Menu-bar data usage monitor for Mac, counted per network
Byter is a free menu-bar app for Mac that answers the question macOS leaves open: where did all that mobile data go? It counts how much data passes through your connections and keeps the count per network, so your home Wi-Fi and your phone hotspot are never lumped together. The current release is 0.1.09, a 7.9 MB download, and it is free with no ads.
The per-network counting is the point. Tether for an hour on a train and Byter can show what that session cost, separate from your home connection. A per-app breakdown shows which apps and processes are responsible, a live speed readout sits in the menu bar, and a built-in speed test and ping check are there when the connection feels off. It runs on macOS 14 Sonoma or later, on Apple Silicon and Intel alike.
The limits are simple: there is no Windows or Linux version, the app is young at version 0.1.x, and its privacy policy notes it shares anonymous, aggregated feature-usage information even though your traffic data itself stays on your Mac. For anyone who burns through a hotspot bundle without ever knowing why, it is a very targeted answer.
