FreeRDP 3.33 Brings Remote Desktop to Your Browser With WebAssembly

Your remote desktop client just moved into a browser tab. FreeRDP 3.33.0, released today, ships WebAssembly support for the open-source implementation of Microsoft's Remote Desktop Protocol - compile it to WASM and the client runs directly inside a web browser, no local install needed.

The project has been working toward EmScripten and WebAssembly builds for several years, and 3.33 is the release where it lands. For anyone who administers Windows machines from Linux or macOS, that's a genuinely new option: an RDP session from any device with a browser.

What else is new

The release is packed beyond the headline feature: an improved SDL client with better RAILS handling, experimental UDP support for direct RDP connections without a gateway, Unicode keyboard input pipes now supported by all clients, macOS file clipboard support that no longer requires FUSE, and initial message translations. The experimental Windows shadow server also returns - "back from the dead," as the project puts it - letting a Windows machine share its session.

An AI-sized backlog, and 13 security fixes

The announcement carries an unusually honest footnote: "The influx of pull requests and feedback for bugs/regressions was huge, so we will do a patch release with all the papercuts and bugs still in the backlog soon." Phoronix attributes the surge to the wave of AI-assisted coding contributions hitting open-source projects. More important for users: 3.33.0 bundles fixes for 13 security advisories, published alongside the release. If you run FreeRDP - directly or through tools like Remmina that build on it - updating is the move, with a patch release to follow for the remaining backlog.
